The popularity of high-quality and durable Sensuji (thousand stripes) never waned, and various kinds of striped fabrics that were in circulation in Japan at the time were exported to Hawaii. These fabrics, reminiscent of kasuri, became as popular in Hawaii at the time as palaka, and were a source of emotional support for Japanese immigrants longing for their distant homeland. They were popular not only as workwear but also as street wear, and short-sleeved types were also produced.
